Description
Tawny frogmouths (Podargus strigoides) are masters of camouflage, using their mottled plumage and skills at mimicry to imitate broken branches near timbered river courses.
With nocturnal habits similar to owls, they differ in having wide beaks, forward-facing eyes, and smaller legs. Tawnys utter a drumming sound during breeding season, with pairs performing ‘duets’, and bonding for life.
Carnivorous, they serve as an effective pest control, swooping down and snapping up prey using their beaks with great precision, or sitting with their beaks open, waiting for moths.
A much beloved bird, they are at risk from cats, dogs, foxes, and land clearing. Pesticides intended for bugs and rodents can also be fatal. Once the tainted prey is eaten, the poisons accumulate in the birds’ fatty tissues until winter, when it enters the bloodstream. And with less Tawnys around, we have even more pests!
Environmentally friendly, ethical greeting cards for all occasions!
These fun and ofttimes whimsical cards are printed by Australian Trade Printers on high quality, 100% recycled Envirocare stock.
Our cards are A6 (105x148mm), and the backs include the character (or artwork’s) name, and in some cases, a brief story or description of the depicted flora and fauna, such as in the case of the Tawny frogmouth, or the fairy folk we’ve been creating over the years. Many of these feature the native (or invasive!) species we’ve come across in our wanderings and garden ventures.
We also source Australian-made, recycled paper envelopes. This means no plastics, no laminates, and no exploited labourers working in horrible conditions!
Send a greeting that won’t cost the earth, and support several small local businesses in the process.
