The Not-So-Scary Huntsman – Rhyming Picture Book
$25.00
A bug-friendly, rhyming picture book independently created and printed in Australia.
In stock (can be backordered)
A fun and meaningful tale, told in rhyme, of a girl and her misunderstood spider friend. π€π·
The story follows young Phoebe, who upon moving house, meets a very big, very shy, Huntsman spider. With themes of overcoming old attitudes and co-existing with nature, our emotive characters portray insects and spiders in a kinder light. There's many a positive side to these misunderstood and vilified arachnids, and we hope to encourage wonder and respect with this picture book. After all, weβre considerably bigger and scarier than they are!
Set in Queensland, the book features over 36 illustrations inspired by our gardening and permaculture ventures. The story is told in rhyme, so as to help readers sound out unknown words that share common letters, and assists with early literacy development and phonemic awareness skills. It makes reading a bit more fun, too.
To top it off, these landscape, softcover books are printed in Australia, on sustainable, Envirocare paper! π
We've also made our own toys to go with the book. All items are made by us, packaged and posted with recyclable and/or recycled materials, so that our books and toys don't cost the Earth π
P.S. If you live outside Australia and would like anything in our store, reach us at [email protected] and we'll work out the postal cost for you.

I’ve always tried to get our kids not to be scared of the huntsmen we occasionally find, but its not easy. This book has been a delight for our kids and a wholesome way to make them feel less afraid of spiders.
The rhyme makes reading it a lot of fun and it quickly become one of our most requested bed time stories.
The artwork is delightful and the kids have a lot of fun pointing out the little details.
This is a great addition to any collection of kids books that is sure to excite their imagination.

The story is warm, simple and funny, and every page is frame-worthy. You and the kids will probably appreciate more detail every time you read with them. It’s just a beautiful book, with a lovely message about looking beyond the surface, standing up for your friends and learning more about the critters around you.

Charming book, beautifully presented and well written. Can’t wait to read it to my nieces. They’re not afraid of spiders but I am, hopefully this will help!
